US Open – 20 Top Triumphs and Upsets to Remember
By Sam Belden
#6: Johnny Miller’s record-setting final round propelled him to victory at the 1973 US Open.
Twenty-four men in history have signed for a round of 63 at a major championship, but Johnny Miller, the first to pull it off, probably has a claim to the most impressive of those. He pulled off the feat in the final round at Oakmont in 1973 and went on to win the tournament, making his victory a unique case.
After shooting a 76 on Saturday, Miller trailed by six strokes and was in a tie for 13th, but he never took his eyes off the prize. He birdied the first four holes in his final round and circled four more after making the turn, good enough to propel him to the first 63 in major championship history.
Throughout the rest of the day, many players tried to respond, but none were able to reach his five-under number. It was Miller’s first and only US Open title.
