#19: He needed a little luck to pull it off, but Geoff Ogilvy’s Winged Foot win in 2006 was impressive nevertheless.

This one might not be the most impressive major triumph in history, but it was definitely memorable. Geoff Ogilvy was the week’s top performer at Winged Foot, becoming the first Australian to win the event in 25 years, but he couldn’t have done it without important assists from Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie.

Ogilvy trailed Mickelson and England’s Kenneth Ferrie by a stroke heading into the final round. While he made back-to-back birdies on five and six to briefly take the outright lead, it was all bogeys and pars the rest of the way, and the eventual champ ended up receiving little airtime as he made his way through the back nine.

Mickelson and Montgomerie were the featured players, and both strolled to the 18th tee with a stroke on Ogilvy and a great chance to win. Incredibly, both men double-bogeyed, with Mickelson’s drive into the trees and fried egg bunker shot standing as defining moments from the week.

When all was said and done, the man from Down Under had the best score of anyone, a suitably wild finish to a wild week.
