US Open – 20 Top Triumphs and Upsets to Remember
By Sam Belden
#16: Not much time has passed, but Jordan Spieth still deserves recognition for his win at Chambers Bay in 2015.
In some ways, this US Open was larger than life. For the first time, the event was played at Chambers Bay, one of the most intimidating tracks in its history. With bumpy greens, a diabolical design and poor accessibility for the fans, the course wasn’t without its detractors, but its views of the Puget Sound proved a great backdrop as Jordan Spieth won his second major of the year.
Four men shared the lead after three rounds: Spieth, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Branden Grace. It was Johnson who zoomed off to a hot start on Sunday, but three bogeys around the turn cost him dearly.
The players soldiered on, and Spieth eventually posted five-under. Johnson, playing in the final group, had an eagle putt for the win on 18; not only did he miss, but he also missed his four-foot birdie attempt to force a playoff, adding to his long list of major heartbreaks.
With the win, Spieth became the first person since Jack Nicklaus to win the first two legs of the Grand Slam. Thanks to its dramatic finish and polarizing course, the 2015 event will be remembered for generations to come.
