US Open – 20 Top Triumphs and Upsets to Remember
By Sam Belden
#14: It wasn’t quite his finest hour, but the 2002 US Open still featured a vintage performance from Tiger Woods.
This one wasn’t as impressive as Woods’ other two US Open victories (more on that later), but Bethpage Black nevertheless provided a great stage for the world’s top-ranked player to shine. Career rivals Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia played supporting roles throughout the week, giving the event a kind of mystical quality.
This one was a classic Woods win. He shot the low round of the day on Thursday to immediately seize the lead and backed it up with a second round 68 to extend it to three. By the end of Saturday’s round, he led the second-place Garcia by four and Mickelson by five, and the rest is history.
Of course, Woods didn’t relinquish the lead, closing with a 72 for his second US Open title. Mickelson tried to make a charge but ran out of gas at the end (ending up with the second of his eventual six runner-up finishes), while Garcia circled just one birdie on the day.
