PGA Tour: Top 5 Player of the Year Contenders
By Sam Belden
#3: Adam Scott (2 wins, $4,974,085)
It’s been a terrific comeback campaign for former world No. 1 Adam Scott. Forced to re-adjust to using a conventional putter after the recent anchoring ban, the Aussie was an early exit from last year’s FedEx Cup playoffs but has bounced back in a big way, winning back-to-back PGA Tour events a few months back.
Coming off a runner-up finish at the Northern Trust Open, Scott arrived at PGA National for the Honda Classic in terrific form and delivered, securing his first PGA Tour victory in nearly two years. One week later, he took advantage of 54-hole leader Rory McIlroy’s final round struggles at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, seizing his second career World Golf Championship and 13th career win.
While Scott hasn’t been all that impressive at the majors this year, he still deserves credit for picking up multiple victories. Ultimately, his WGC win is what lifts him into the top three on this list — while Spieth’s wins have been limited to moderately competitive events, Scott managed to beat a field that was packed with elite players.
