PGA Tour: Top 5 Player of the Year Contenders
By Sam Belden
#1: Dustin Johnson (2 wins, $6,591,424)
DJ has flipped the POY discussion on its head over the past few weeks. Before winning the U.S. Open, he was enjoying a rock-solid year — winless, but still littered with top five finishes. Now, Johnson has his first multi-win season since 2010 and appears to be the odds-on favorite for Player of the Year honors.
While the final round was rife with controversy, Johnson’s major victory at Oakmont finally established that he can win on any stage. The Coastal Carolina product hit wedge into green after green and was one of just two players to break 70 in three of the four rounds. Just two weeks later, he shot twin 66s on the weekend at Firestone Country Club to take the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, his third career World Golf Championship win.
With those two massive victories, it’s no surprise that Johnson has overtaken Day in the race to the FedEx Cup. DJ has been the most impressive player to this point in the 2015-16 season, and with all the momentum he’s gathered over the past month, he could lock up the Player of the Year award sooner rather than later.
