OWGR: Ranking Every World No. 1 in History
9. Jordan Spieth
Time at the top: 26 weeks
Given the run Jason Day has had, it’s easy to forget about Jordan Spieth’s similarly dominant run from last year. Recency bias would favor Day over Spieth on this list, but from a broad perspective, Spieth has more years left at his disposal, more weeks at No. 1 (20) and two major championships to Day’s one.
Spieth exists in a refreshingly competitive era in which Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy are aligning as the new balance of power. I think the top spot will change hands several times over the next decade, but Spieth has proven that when he is on top of his game, he can get to astronomical places — including the No. 1 spot in the OWGR.
Spieth won the Masters at the age of 21, showing an immense amount of maturity at an age where most are still living at home. Getting back to No. 1 shouldn’t faze him too much.
