Royal Troon: Looking back at eight British Open champions
By Josh Morris
Royal Troon has produced eight Open Championship winners in the tournament’s history.
Royal Troon is this year’s venue for the 145th staging of The Open Championship, which has been held in South Ayrshire on only eight occasions. In 1923, Royal Troon hosted The Open Championship for the first time in the history of the event. It was a replacement venue after Muirfield was deemed an undesirable location. Its winners have included both heroes like Arnold Palmer, as well as unlikely underdogs like Todd Hamilton — all tested and worthy champions. While the first winner was from England and the next from South Africa, every one since then has been from the States. Can another American pull it off this year?
In honor of this week’s Open Championship, let’s take a look back at the eight men who earned the title of Champion Golfer of the Year at Royal Troon.
