In 1989, Mark Calcavecchia won his only major, but it was yet another letdown for Greg Norman.
At the 1989 Open, it seemed to be Greg Norman’s year. As the Aussie said during the tournament, “I’ve had a few majors taken from me. Maybe it’s my turn to have one handed to me.” But he was obstructed as the 29-year-old Mark Calcavecchia won his only major championship on the links of Royal Troon. Calcavecchia won it in a playoff over Norman and Wayne Grady, who had held the lead for most of the tournament. Although Calc had a great career, this stands as the definitive highlight.
