RBC Canadian Open: 5 Things You Didn’t Know

1. “Triple Crown” Winners: Lee Trevino & Tiger Woods
Only two men in the history of the sport have won the U.S. Open, The (British) Open and the Canadian Open in the same year: Lee Trevino and Tiger Woods. Trevino completed his Triple Crown during the 1971 PGA season, in which he collected the second and third major wins of his career. Woods accomplished this feat in 2000, when the ongoing joke was that the field was “competing for second place” every week. This rang true when Tiger won the RBC Canadian Open for his ninth victory of the year.
The feat was almost accomplished by Tom Weiskopf during the 1973 PGA Tour season. Weiskopf had secured what ended up being the only major of his career during the ’73 Open at Royal Troon and kept the hot streak going by winning the Canadian Open a week later. His only shortcoming was his third-place finish behind Johnny Miller and John Schlee at the 1973 U.S. Open. Weiskopf was undoubtably playing the best golf of his career at the time, and no one threatened the “Triple Crown” again until Woods.
