5. Only once has a Canadian won: Pat Fletcher in 1954.

In sports, everyone loves a hometown hero — but that story has been completed by only one Canadian in the history of the RBC Canadian Open: Pat Fletcher in 1954. Fletcher was the winner of only five events before he won with a score of eight-under, making Canadian golf history. It was undoubtedly going to be a Canadian to win it in ’54 anyway, as the two runners-up were countrymen of Fletcher’s.

Others have come close. Mike Weir had the country rallying behind him as he led the tournament in 2004. Weir, having won a green jacket less than two years before, held a three-shot lead going into the final round only to lose it to the big Fijian Vijay Singh. More recently, David Hearn had a chance to become the first native winner of the event in 61 years but finished the event in third behind Day and Bubba Watson after a level-par round of 72 on Sunday.

In June, we saw Dustin Johnson fine-tune all aspects of his game to overcome and achieve his first major championship. Just last week, we got to see the first Swedish major win with Henrik Stenson’s victory at The Open. Will 2016 be the year that we see a Canadian rise above the ranks and prevail in his home country?
