There’s a real chance that the closing holes on Sunday might just feel a little bit different this week. While in a regular tour event those in contention will generally be prepared to go all out in an attempt to win, we might see some more conservative golf in Rio.
For as much as every player in the field will be craving a gold medal, this week represents a unique scenario where there are in fact prizes not just for second place, but third also.
The Olympic Games only come around once every four years and with no guarantee for these players that they’ll be qualifiers for Tokyo 2020, a chance at a medal won’t be taken lightly.
Of course, you’ll see players pushing to claim gold, but don’t expect reckless play from those in with a chance of silver or bronze either.
When all is said and done this week, only three players will walk away as Olympic medalists. Golfers aren’t used to celebrating third place, but in this case, they’ll be doing everything in their power to avoid falling to fourth.
