Si Woo Kim seized the second round lead early on Friday at the Wyndham Championship having just missed out on a round of 59.

Having waited so long for a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour, it wouldn’t really surprise anyone to see Jim Furyk’s 58 from the Travelers Championship followed up in the near future.

Still, I’m not sure anyone expected the sub-60 mark to be threatened again so soon, but that’s exactly what happened in North Carolina on Friday.

South Korea’s Si Woo Kim has yet to pick up his first PGA Tour win, having fallen just short in a playoff against Aaron Baddeley at the Barbasol Championship, but if his play on Friday is anything to go by he won’t have to wait too much longer to find himself in the winner’s circle.

Starting his round on the 10th hole, Kim opened his round with a birdie and quickly got in rhythm from there.

Birdies at holes 12, 13, 15, 16 and 18 followed, as the 21-year-old finished the first half of his round in 29 strokes.

The front nine, playing as the home nine for Kim in this case, led to more pars for the Korean than he saw on the back side, but striking the ball beautifully and putting with confidence a chance remained for Kim to join one of the tour’s most exclusive clubs.

A birdie on the second was followed by an 11-foot eagle putt on the fifth green, which Kim drained to move to nine-under for his round and 11-under for the tournament overall.

That meant when Kim stood on the eighth tee box, the 17th hole of his round he was staring at a birdie-birdie finish for a round of 59.

An aggressive tee shot allowed Kim to really attack with his approach into the short par-4. Kim took his second past the hole with a wedge in hand before allowing it to spin softly back down the hill to leave him an uphill putt. The youngster rolled it in from no more than 10 feet and headed to the final hole of his round.

Having opted to hit driver off of the ninth tee, the Korean found himself hitting into the green from the rough on the left hand side of the fairway. Unable to get the ball any closer than 50 feet from the flag, it seemed as if Kim’s hopes at 59 were over.

Jonas Blixt attempted a putt on a similar line to Kim’s beforehand illustrating the treacherous slope and wide arcing break that would have to be navigated for 59.

Kim’s putt gently made it’s way down the hill, looking in the whole way, before ultimately burning the edge of the cup.

In tapping in for a round of 60, Kim achieved a new course record at Sedgefield Country Club and an all-time low round at the Wyndham Championship.

With Kim’s round of 60 four strokes better than any other the course so far on Friday, it’ll be interesting to see what other low scores could be on the course as the day goes on.
