Tom Lewis was among those who grabbed a share of the opening round lead at the Made In Denmark tournament following an incredible round of 62, but will be left to rue missing out on a real chance at 59.

With the sub-60 barrier having recently been shattered by Jim Furyk on the PGA Tour, it’s not too much of a stretch to expect a similar mark to be achieved on the European Tour very soon.

In the opening round of the Made In Denmark tournament at the Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort on Thursday, there was a period when it seemed as if that day had come.

England’s Tom Lewis played close to the most perfect 13 holes imaginable, but in the end, the weight of history took its toll down the stretch as he feel just short of a magical 59.

More from European tour

Far from a household name in the world of golf, Lewis is probably best known for leading The Open Championship as an amateur back in 2011. With only one European Tour win to his name since turning pro, watching Lewis play on Thursday made it tough to understand why he hasn’t had greater success.

Starting on the 10th hole, the 25-year-old birdied his first four holes before following up a par on 14 with birdies on his next three holes.

Lewis would turn in 28 strokes and started the front nine, his second nine, with a remarkable three straight birdies and an eagle. Standing on the tee box for the 14th hole of his round, Lewis sat at 12-under-par on a par 71 course. Five straight pars would have delivered history.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Playing with playing partners who certainly didn’t help his rhythm due to lengthy searches for lost balls and rulings from officials, Lewis stuttered home with three bogeys for a total of 62.

Visibly disappointed at the end of the round, Lewis finished his day tied with two men who had also posted rounds of 62 earlier in the day.

Having just missed out on glory at last week’s Czech Masters, in-form Thomas Pieters continued to make a red-hot charge towards a potential captain’s pick from Darren Clarke for the upcoming Ryder Cup.

Pieters’ form is clearly among the best of all the European players, and having played alongside Clarke on Thursday, three more good rounds might just be enough to punch his ticket to Hazeltine.

Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren also managed to shoot a 62, and was the only one of the trio who managed to do so without a single bogey on his card.

On a day when big crowds packed the course making for an astonishing Thursday atmosphere, one of the more memorable moments came as Robert Karlsson recorded an ace at the par-3 16th hole, a favorite for spectators to gather around.
