Luke Donald

You have to look quite a bit down the European Ryder Cup standings to find the name of former world no. 1, Luke Donald, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for Darren Clarke to select him.

Donald is well placed in the FedEx Cup standings and will be hoping to make further inroads on the PGA Tour in the coming weeks, but coming off the back of a second placed finish at the Wyndham Championship less than 10 days ago, Donald might have found a sliver of form at just the right time.

Donald has an outstanding track record at the Ryder Cup, having only lost four of his 15 contests to date between appearances on the European team in 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2012.

Donald is a foursomes specialist who has struck up a great partnership with Sergio Garcia down the years and has never come out on a losing side against the US in four Ryder Cup and two Walker Cup appearances. If Clarke wants to add some experience, Donald is a logical choice.
