PGA Tour Fantasy Picks: WGC-Mexico Championship
By Sam Belden
Jhonattan Vegas — $6,600
With so many star players present, it’s always tough to stand out as a mid-tier PGA Tour member at a World Golf Championship event. However, it seems that every WGC features at least one lesser known player who defies expectations, and Vegas has enough going for him to be that player this week.
Vegas has found the top 35 in each of his last seven worldwide starts, peaking with a tie for fourth at last week’s Honda Classic. There, he ranked third in strokes gained: tee-to-green and tied for seventh in greens in regulation, so his game is definitely in working order as he prepares to head south of the border. His length might not do all that much for him this week, but if he can compensate with his irons, the low scores will come.
He wasn’t much for consistency during the early part of his PGA Tour tenure, but now that he’s in his seventh season on the circuit, Vegas has actually become a fairly reliable player. At $6,600 in DraftKings, he could be well worth the investment, even going up against a field fully stocked with marquee talents. His fifth career WGC start just might be one to remember.
