Masters Dark Horses: 10 Under the Radar Picks for Augusta
By Sam Belden
Bernhard Langer
OWGR: 982nd
Odds: 500/1
Okay, so this German probably won’t win another green jacket in his career, but it’s a fun hypothetical, right? Langer has enjoyed tremendous success on the Champions Tour over the past few years, making him the standard bearer for the over-50 crowd as we make our way to the Masters.
With three top 25s in the last four years, including a tie for eighth in 2014, Langer has demonstrated an ability to hold his own at Augusta when most players his age are finished by Friday afternoon. The Masters winner in both 1985 and 1993, Langer has an expert knowledge of the course that’s shown in the results. With seven Champions Tour victories over the last two years, he’s remained familiar with the winner’s circle well into his middle age, and with his easy schedule this time of year, he should roll into Georgia with plenty of energy.
Make no mistake — Langer is a huge long shot to win at Augusta. But in a world where Tom Watson can make a run at The Open Championship at 59, you have to think this German has at least a slim chance to take the Masters at the same age. In a game where youth now dominates, he could turn back the clock.
