Dustin Johnson — 3rd

With a win at the WGC-Mexico Championship, Johnson has never lost an event as the world No. 1. That run will end soon — perhaps as soon as this week — but the point is that this Coastal Carolina product’s confidence should be soaring as he makes his way down to Austin. All told, he’s found the top six in six of his last seven starts around the world and hasn’t missed out on the top three since January. At last year’s WGC-Match Play, he played brilliantly before losing to eventual runner-up Louis Oosthuizen in the semifinals, ending up in a tie for fifth.

Match play can be a crapshoot, but Johnson checks all of the boxes for projected success this week. For many, so much will depend on the draw, but Johnson has what it takes to outplay any combination of players in the field.
