WGC-Match Play: Predictions for All 16 Groups
By Sam Belden
Group 1: Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Martin Kaymer, Webb Simpson
Sam’s Pick: Johnson — This is a group of major champions, with three U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships between them. However, while their major counts may be similar, there’s no debate over the favorite among this group. With a pair of victories in his last two starts, Johnson looks poised to make a run at the trophy, and anything less would be a surprise.
That said, there is some talent in this group. Kaymer, a former WGC-Match Play winner, is sporadically magnificent in this format, while Walker has at least been consistent to this point in the new year. If Simpson can keep his wits about him on the greens, he can also be dangerous.
But even so, everyone will be looking for DJ to escape from this group. He’s got the talent and momentum to beat anyone, no matter how skilled.
Beth’s Pick: Walker — There’s a history between Jimmy Walker and Dustin Johnson and I think Walker’s going to be looking to even the score during the match play round robins. The Texan isn’t going to be intimidated by DJ’s big, powerful game. He has one, himself, and while he’s going to be playing catch-up tee-to-green with Johnson, it’s Walker’s depth of experience and his Cool Hand Luke mental game that will give him the edge. No doubt it will be a battle, but I’m looking for Walker to still be standing when we get to the Round of 16.
