WGC-Match Play: Predictions for All 16 Groups
By Sam Belden
Group 3: Jason Day, Marc Leishman, Lee Westwood, Pat Perez
Sam’s Pick: Leishman — This might just be the most interesting group of them all. With ten PGA Tour victories to his name, including last year’s WGC-Match Play, Day is the apparent favorite, but given his mediocre 2017, the conditions look right for a good old-fashioned match play upset.
Fellow Aussie Leishman, the winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, is definitely in the right form to pull it off, but he’ll need to keep putting as well as he did last week. If he can’t, then veterans Westwood, a vastly experienced match player, and Perez, who’s taken his game to new heights this season, will also have a chance.
At first glance, it’s hard to know what to make of this group, but I’m not going to overthink it. Leishman has the momentum to make a run at another trophy, so I’ll roll with him over the unreliable Day.
Beth’s Pick: Leishman — I’m always partial to Jason Day. He’s shown some remarkable grit. But Day’s not fine-tuned yet, and Leishman’s hot as a firecracker. Those putting stats he laid down in the final round at Bay Hill should have the entire group ready to concede. I don’t know how things will look when the field gets to Augusta National, but this week Leishman has the edge.
