Tommy Fleetwood – OWGR 33

Until Sergio won the 2017 Masters Tommy Fleetwood was holding on to the lead in the Race to Dubai, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him notch a win or two in the coming months and get back on the top of the Race.

The 26-year old Englishman caught everybody’s eye when he beat back Dustin Johnson to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January. That Fleetwood finished runner-up to Johnson two months later at the WGC-Mexico Championship only enhanced Fleetwood’s creds so far as I’m concerned.

Fleetwood’s long off the tee – averaging 300+ yards – and he’s about as accurate as they come. If he has a weakness, it’s his flatstick. He’s been averaging 31.5 putts per round, and if he wants to notch a win this week he needs to sharpen up his putts. But Fleetwood’s coming to the tee this week with a secret weapon. He finished runner-up at the 2014 Volvo China Open, which was also contended at the Genzon Golf Club. He’s one of the few in the field (except perhaps Alexander Levy) bringing that level of local knowledge to the tee.
