No. 5 Casey Wittenberg

Casey Wittenberg is still just 32 years old but many have forgotten the former up-and-comer who wowed us just over a decade ago.

Wittenberg was a standout at Oklahoma State and advanced to the 2003 US Amateur finals as a freshman. That paved his way to carding a Sunday back nine 31 at the 2004 Masters for low-am honors that year. He went on to make the cut at the US Open, too, and turned pro.

The instant gratification afterward didn’t come. Instead, he toiled on the mini tours until breaking through for a win at the Web.com Tour’s Chitimacha Louisiana Open in March 2012. Wittenberg nearly went from winless on the Web.com Tour to cinching a spot on the PGA TOUR in months, courtesy of a second win in June 2012. A third didn’t come for an instant promotion, but he was riding high from Web.com Tour Player of the Year honors

Wittenberg’s stint in the big leagues was short-lived. In 2013 he was sent back to regroup. Again, little was heard from him until another win at this season’s Louisiana Open that all but assured he’ll get another crack at the PGA TOUR for 2017-18.

He’ll return to the Wichita Open this June, site of his second win in 2012. The Lincoln Land Charity Championship also awaits in July where he placed T2nd in 2016. Wittenberg missed the cut in his four prior starts to winning in Louisiana last month, which isn’t great. Still, one of the more talented players at that level is now freed up to go for more victories. Few are armed with big-stage experience like Wittenberg.
