FedEx Cup rankings through Zurich Classic: May 3, 2017
6: Jordan Spieth
10 events – 1192 points, 1 win, 5 top 10’s (avg. points/event – 119.2)
Last start: 4th, Zurich Classic of New Orleans (88 FedEx Cup points)
Jordan Spieth is having, well, a Jordan Spieth type of year once again in 2017. Obviously, he had a tough week at Augusta, but 99% of Tour players would absolutely kill to have Spieth’s record right now.
A surprising missed cut at the Shell Houston Open is the only blemish on Spieth’s otherwise sparkling season. In eight other stroke-play events this year, the 23-year-old has finished outside the top-15 just once. When you see someone put together the kind of consistency that Spieth has over the past few years, there’s really nothing to pick at. It’s just a matter of the timing, and when it all comes together, the results speak for themselves.
Spieth will make his next start at The PLAYERS Championship, one of the few courses on Tour that could trouble him. In his 2014 Sawgrass debut, Spieth finished tied for fourth, but he has missed the cut there each of the last two years. While Spieth doesn’t “need” to win any particular event – he sticks to his plan and trusts that the results will follow – kicking off the summer schedule with a strong showing at the “fifth major” will go a long way towards his FedEx Cup hopes.
