FedEx Cup rankings through Zurich Classic: May 3, 2017
3: Hideki Matsuyama
12 events – 1826 points, 2 wins, 4 top 10’s (avg. points/event – 152.167)
Last start: T32, Zurich Classic of New Orleans (4 FedEx Cup points)
Hideki Matsuyama is certainly one of the best young players on the PGA Tour today, and he proved that early this year, doing most of his damage by the time the calendar even flipped into February. Heck, he did it without even stepping foot on an American golf course.
Matsuyama took full advantage of the fall season, finishing second at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia. He then headed to China for the WGC-HSBC Champions, winning that event and bringing home 550 points with the WGC bonus.
Since then, he has just two top-ten finishes, with an additional pair of top-25’s to go along. What does that look like? He finished second at the Tournament of Champions, won in Phoenix, finished T25 at the WGC Mexico, and T11 at the Masters. He earned 907 points in those four events alone – that would put him just ahead of Masters champion Sergio Garcia for 12th in the FedEx Cup race.
Matsuyama heads into the busy summer schedule in fine form, but will it be enough to dethrone the leader? We’ll get our first chance to see next week at Sawgrass.
