Jason Day was the top dog last year at THE PLAYERS Championship, but does he make sense as a fantasy option this time around?

With the Wells Fargo Championship in the rearview mirror, the PGA Tour now heads south to Florida for one of the most anticipated events on the calendar: THE PLAYERS Championship. The circuit’s flagship event usually isn’t quite as compelling as the majors, but then again, what is?

Fantasy managers should view this event as a kind of dry run for the rest of the major season. There’s a top-tier field assembled at TPC Sawgrass this week and while the world rankings are sure to be shaken up considerably between now and August, the general crop of contenders will remain largely the same. In particular, THE PLAYERS should be good practice for the PGA Championship, another event that features a lot of talented internationals and average PGA Tour veterans to go along with the game’s elite.

Of course, most of the focus this week will be on the more prominent players. With Dustin Johnson returning, Jason Day slumping and Henrik Stenson missing cuts left and right, there are plenty of storylines in play, but as fantasy managers we need to cast a wider net. For that reason, the top player in this feature is a big name who’s surrounded by significantly less drama at the moment.

Without further ado, let’s get to my picks for this week. Here are five solid bets for fantasy success at THE PLAYERS Championship. Each player’s current position in the Official World Golf Ranking is listed next to his name.
