Chad Campbell

Official World Ranking: 192

FedEx Cup: 91

Best Nelson Finish: Fifth, 2006

There’s the old “horses for courses” adage, and then there’s Chad Campbell at the AT&T Byron Nelson. The 42-year-old native of Andrews, TX is making his 16th consecutive trip to the Nelson, and it’s become one of his more consistent events to boot.

Campbell has as many top-25s at the Nelson (4) as he does missed cuts, with his most recent coming in 2016. Having only finished in the top-25 in two of ten events heading to Las Colinas last year, Campbell popped up with four straight rounds under par, posting 66-69-66-68 in a tie for 12th place.

This year, Campbell has just one top-25 in his last 11 events, after finishing T6 at the CareerBuilder Challenge in January. Campbell’s still playing some relatively solid golf, ranking 48th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, and 11th in Scrambling. Unfortunately, the putter has become his worst enemy, ranking 197th in Strokes Gained: Putting.

No doubt about it, Campbell is a pretty big gamble. That’s why this column exists in the first place. But if you’re looking for a true “dark horse” to step up and put up a surprise top-10 finish, look no further than this man.
