How odd is it that it felt like Dustin Johnson somehow fell short of our expectations when he finished T-12 at THE PLAYERS? Granted, it speaks volumes about our unrealistic expectation that greatness can be sustained indefinitely (ref. Woods, Tiger). But what I take from Johnson’s run this past week at TPC Sawgrass is progress. He was actually a stroke worse in 2017 than he was a year ago, but this year was clearly a more difficult test. At two-over through 54 holes, Johnson was 11 shots back of the lead, but he grinded it out and earned every bit of that near top-ten finish.
Speaking of Tiger, we could be on the precipice of a crazy summer for Johnson. In June, he’ll get another shot at a major in Wisconsin, after a pair of top-tens at Whistling Straits in 2010 (which should have been a playoff) and 2015.
He’ll then head to Royal Birkdale for the Open Championship, where he has started to unlock the formula for victory, with five top-15 finishes in his last seven starts. He’ll wrap up the major season at Quail Hollow, where he hasn’t played in years but seems to be a perfect fit for the PGA Championship.
At the end of the day, this much is clear: DJ is the man to beat, and it will stay that way until somebody gets on his level.
