Johnson has spent an awful lot of time occupying this pole position over the past few months and he hasn’t given us a reason to start doubting him yet. Currently on a run of seven consecutive top- 15 finishes, including a sublime stretch of back-to-back-to-back victories in February and March, the Coastal Carolina product looks every bit like the frontrunner for this week’s event.

Johnson may have slowed down from that spectacular late-winter streak, but he still showed plenty of game in his last two starts, posting a tie for 12th at THE PLAYERS Championship and a tie for 13th at the AT&T Byron Nelson. The good news for this week: he’s got a much better track record at Muirfield Village than he does at either of those events, making eight of nine cuts here with a solo third-place finish in last year’s edition. The PGA TOUR leader in driving distance, greens in regulation and total strokes gained, his statistical profile speaks for itself.

With 15 PGA TOUR victories to his name, Johnson has been one of the most prolific winners of the last decade, but he still needs a Memorial Tournament trophy for his collection. The way he’s been hitting the ball lately, he might need to make some room in his display case by the end of the week.
