Memorial Tournament 2017: 5 groups to watch in Rounds 1 & 2
By Luke Norris
3. Jason Day, Si Woo Kim, Adam Scott
1st Round: 1st tee, 1:27 p.m.
2nd Round: 10th tee, 8:37 a.m.
What a powerhouse threesome this is. Jason Day is the highest-ranked player of the group at No. 3 and nearly got back into the winner’s circle with a solo-second finish at the AT&T Byron Nelson two weeks ago. He didn’t have the greatest showing at THE PLAYERS, finishing in a tie for 60th, but he hasn’t missed a cut in his last seven tournaments so he’s got that going for him. What he doesn’t have is a very good history at the Memorial. Here’s what he’s done the last five years at Muirfield Village: T-27, MC, T-37, T-41, MC. That’s not exactly a line that says he has a chance. But this is still Jason Day and he’s got a chance to win any tournament he enters.
Adam Scott hasn’t teed it up since THE PLAYERS Championship but he tied for sixth there and tied for 9th at The Masters so he has been playing well. It’s been three years since he teed it up at Muirfield Village but does have a nice memory to fall back on after tying for fourth in 2014. The former number one player in the world hasn’t won since last March’s WGC-Cadillac Championship but continues to play solid golf.
Si Woo Kim is the final member of this group but following his life-changing win at THE PLAYERS Championship, he didn’t exactly set the world on fire with his follow-up performance at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational. After opening with a 2-over 72 on Thursday, he followed it up with a 3-over 73 on Friday, a round that included a quadruple-bogey 8 on the par-4 9th hole. He’ll look to rebound this week in his second appearance at the Memorial. He finished tied for 74th last year.
