2. Hideki Matsuyama

1,865 points, 13 events (143.46 avg.)

Two wins, four top-tens

Last two weeks: DNP

Matsuyama is still hanging on to his second-place ranking despite being inactive the last two weeks. He came a putt away from dropping to third, but Jon Rahm couldn’t quite close the deal in Fort Worth. Still, Matsuyama belongs at the top, even when he’s enjoying his rest time.

Back in action at Muirfield Village this week at the Memorial Tournament, Matsuyama can mathematically pass DJ for the top spot in the FedEx Cup rankings with a win. Recent form (three top-25 finishes since March) says that’s not highly likely, but we’ve seen crazier things out there.

I’ve written about it before, but I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that Matsuyama’s putting remains atrocious, overall. Matsuyama is currently 182nd on Tour in Strokes Gained – Putting, and 130th in putts inside 10 feet. If he gets that flat stick going, even for just one weekend, he could rattle off a series top finishes very, very soon. A third win would likely solidify his position among the top three or four heading into the Playoffs.
