Memphis, Tennessee

108 players for 9 spots

As mentioned in the intro, Steve Stricker was the medalist in Memphis. He made only two bogeys on the day and made four birdies in a row on the front nine in round two to rise to the top at 10-under.

Stricker’s made the cut in 23 consecutive majors he’s played in and nine consecutive U.S. Opens, all top-30 finishes but one. This will be his 20th U.S. Open.

Four PGA TOUR pros and one wild card tied for second place at nine-under.

Andres Romero has slipped to No. 744 in the world with only two world ranking points events on his résumé in 2017. He found good form in Memphis, qualifying for his fourth U.S. Open in which he’s three-for-three in cuts made.

Troy Merritt qualified for his third U.S. Open in a row and is seeking his first made cut.

Chez Reavie also qualified for his third and first since 2012, also the year of his last major start.

Harris English was one of 14 players in 2016 to make the cut in every major. He missed this year’s Masters, but he’s going for his third made cut in a row at the U.S. Open.

The wild card is world No. 1,922, Garrett Osborn. The 32-year-old, who played collegiately at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, is a relative unknown with one career top-10 in seven PGA TOUR starts. He’s played in 88 career Web.com Tour events but only 10 since 2010. It’s been a good week for him as he also Sunday-qualified (moved up from its usual Monday spot) for the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Rounding out the qualifiers are Trey Mullinax (-8), Jonathan Randolph (-7) and Xander Schauffele (-7). Randolph and Schauffele survived a 5-for-2 playoff early Tuesday morning. Meen Whee Kim and Scott Brown are the two alternates.

It will be the first major start for the final three qualifiers.

They beat out a healthy crop of players who missed the cut, including PGA Tour winners Peter Malnati (-6), Ken Duke (-6), Mark Wilson (-5), Brian Gay (-5), Brendon Todd (-5), two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen (-5), Matt Jones (-5), Stuart Appleby (-4), Robert Garrigus (-4), J.J. Henry (-2) and Heath Slocum (+1).
