Springfield, Ohio

77 players for 4 spots

Canada’s Corey Conners was the medalist by three strokes at Springfield CC. The 2014 U.S. amateur runner-up and current Web.com Tour player went bananas in round one.

He fired a bogey-free nine-under 61 including an eagle two on the par-4 14th to set the course record by two. This will be his first U.S. Open and second major start. After missing the cut in last week’s Web.com Tour event, Conners and his caddy scouted Springfield CC and it paid off, according to the USGA.

Also headed to Erin Hills are Brian Stuard (-9), Brice Garnett (-8) and Ryan Brehm (-7).

Stuard is No. 145 in the world and is seeking his first made cut at the U.S. Open in his third try. Garnett is making his second major start. His first was a missed cut at the 2012 U.S. Open. Ryan Brehm shot a 63 in round two for what would have matched the course record if not for Conners’ 61.

Brehm is a Web.com Tour grad from 2016 with only one top-20 in limited starts in the big leagues.

Alternates are Mackenzie Tour player Tyler Light (-6) and University of Texas amateur and Big 12 Player of the Year, Doug Ghim (-6).

Notables to miss out include PGA TOUR pros Zac Blair (-5), Tony Finau (-3) and James Hahn (+3). Finau is ranked No. 69 in the world and is eligible to qualify via the top 60 after this week’s FedEx St. Jude Classic, but he’s not listed in the field.
