Every year we never fail to see cool stories about U.S. Open qualifiers. While some top-75 players in the world are fuming at home on their couch, there are always part-time golfers and guys who aren’t even the best player on the college team make it to the United State’s greatest golf championship.

It’s fascinating.

The feel-good stories wear out quickly. though. Most amateurs who make the field are headed for rounds in the 80s and a desire to get back to their home course as soon as humanly possible.

I’d love to be proven wrong and get a more phenomenal story this week than what the guys at the top of the list could produce, but I’m taking Sahith Theegala, Mason Andersen, Cameron Champ, Alex Smalley and Scott Harvey out of contention for low amateur this week in no particular order.

It’s not like they are unseasoned or untalented. Theegala made the cut at the 2017 Genesis Open, Harvey won the Mid-Am and played at Augusta and Andersen isn’t even in college yet!

Nonetheless, I have the low amateur race down to six thoroughbreds.
