Dustin Johnson

He may have missed the cut in his last start, but despite that recent mishap, Johnson still has the best claim to this top spot. The Coastal Carolina product has been the world’s most productive golfer this year, and his powerful swing should set him up for success at a big ballpark like Erin Hills. With those factors working in his favor, we need to keep an eye on him as he prepares to make his first-ever major title defense.

Johnson has been solid since returning from a back injury, notching three top 15 finishes, including a share of second place at the Wells Fargo Championship, in just four starts. Those results aren’t as good as the ones he was getting earlier in the season, when he notched three straight wins, but he’s at least managed to maintain his statistical standards, leading the PGA TOUR in strokes gained: off-the-tee and ranking sixth in strokes gained: approach-the-green. He lacks familiarity with Erin Hills, but he’s also finished sixth or better in each of the last three U.S. Opens.

He may have fallen apart at the Memorial, but in a week as uncertain as this one, you can’t ignore a proven commodity like Johnson. He could become the first player to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles since Curtis Strange in 1989.
