By his own standards, it’s been a monumentally frustrating season for this Aussie, but with a couple of top 15 finishes in the last month, his game is certainly heading in the right direction. Combine that with his sterling track record at the U.S. Open and Day looks like a clear frontrunner for this week.

Again, Day hasn’t been at his best this year, but there are plenty of reasons for optimism if you look below the surface. For one thing, he ranks second on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained: around-the-green, so we know he can bail himself out of trouble with ease. He also tied for fourth in the field in putts per green in regulation at the Memorial Tournament, an event that hasn’t really been his cup of tea in the past. Perhaps most importantly, Day is always prepared for the USGA’s tough layouts — he’s found the top 10 in five of his six career U.S. Open starts, landing in the top five on three occasions.

Day may have just two top 10s in 2017, but this is the U.S. Open. Going by history, the 29-year-old looks like a clear contender. It would be a real surprise if he’s not in the running come Sunday.
