Rickie Fowler

He may have missed the cut at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, but look on the bright side — at least he got a couple of extra days to prepare. In all seriousness, Fowler has been playing too well this year for us to write him off because of one lost week. Momentum or not, he’s got the kind of well-rounded skill set that makes him a threat to win any tournament he enters.

Before running into trouble at TPC Southwind, Fowler was on a run of seven top 20s in his last eight starts, including a win at the Honda Classic and a share of second place at the Memorial Tournament. Given those results, it’s no surprise that he ranks second on the PGA TOUR in total strokes gained and third in birdie average. While he’s missed the cut at the last two U.S. Opens, that may be due more to coincidence than anything else — his pair of top 10 finishes at the event is proof that his game can hold up on these USGA layouts.

The missed cut was a little worrying, but Fowler is still a great ball striker and a terrific putter. If he can put the St. Jude behind him and regroup, he’ll be well-positioned to make a run this week.
