Sergio Garcia

Can this Spaniard pull a Jordan Spieth and get himself halfway to golf’s fabled Grand Slam? It’s unlikely, but now that he’s got the major monkey off his back, there has to be a part of Garcia that wants to make up for lost time. With his combination of confidence and skill, the 37-year-old should be well-equipped to make a run this week.

Garcia has taken it easy since the Masters — in just three events, he’s gotten progressively better results, peaking with a tie for 12th at the Dean and DeLuca Invitational. He hasn’t missed a single cut this year and has landed inside the top 30 in all but one of his starts, so consistency hasn’t been a problem. The PGA TOUR’s second-ranked player in strokes gained: off-the-tee, his driving skills should provide a big boost this week, especially on a lengthy course like Erin Hills. The U.S. Open hasn’t been his best major historically, but he did tie for fifth in last year’s edition.

This Spaniard has enjoyed some of the best luck of his life in 2017, so he should have the peace of mind he needs to contend for another major. Expect solid results all week long.
