GolfStats has In Gee Chun and Lexi Thompson in a virtually tied 3rd/4th position at this point in the season and last Sunday at the Manulife certainly proves the point. Chun plays a very different golf game than Thompson and yet both are highly effective. Chun has yet to notch a 2017 win but, good heavens, she has four runner-up finishes to her credit. The win will come and given her solo third last year at the Meijer LPGA Classic, there’s every reason to expect it to come this week.
Chun is a careful, steady, consistent player who doesn’t take many risky shots, but then she rarely needs to because she tends not to get out of position. Like Thompson, she excels in tee-to-green play – she ranked 6th on the Tour in GIR – and despite her slightly better than average 29.28 putts per round, she ranks 8th on the Tour in putts per GIR and 2nd in overall scoring overage. In other words, she makes them when they count.
If the pattern holds, In Gee Chun will be the 14th player to join the Tour’s 2017 circle of champions.
