3. Byeong Hun An (Official World Ranking – 56th)

Byeong Hun An, the 25-year-old Cal product, is quietly putting together a steady season in just his second full year on the PGA TOUR. In 15 events so far this year, he’s made the cut in 14, earning over $1.1 million with three top-ten finishes.

His recent form is as good as it’s been all year, as An put together two of those top-ten finishes at Wells Fargo and the Byron Nelson, then tied for 25th at the Memorial Tournament despite a Sunday 75. He even threw a T24 at Wentworth, where he won the 2015 BMW PGA Championship, in for good measure.

An has proven that he has what it takes to win in a strong-field event like this, but what’s missing is a consistency in his putting. In 2017, An is ranked 15th on the PGA TOUR in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. However, he’s also just 147th in Strokes Gained: Putting, losing nearly two-tenths of a stroke per round to the field on the greens alone.

There are only two or three players who even have a chance to legitimately overpower Erin Hills, and An isn’t one of them. Still, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him pushing for the first page of the leaderboard on Moving Day, and potentially beyond.
