We get our first chance to see Phil Mickelson without “Bones” this week. As tough as that is to believe for us fans, it could be even tougher on Phil. This week, he’ll get a fresh perspective on that when his brother, Tim, takes the reins.

Phil will head to the Old White TPC for the first time since 2013, and the first step to success is playing the weekend. In each of Mickelson’s last three trips here, he’s missed the cut. However, Mickelson will also have an inside look that not many others can claim.

That’s because, after severe floods damaged the Greenbrier course at the resort, Mickelson’s design company stepped in to pick up the renovations. Mickelson has also joined Bubba Watson as a Greenbrier ambassador. There shouldn’t be many people out there who know the area any better.

Moreover, Phil should be well-rested and focused entering this week. After skipping the U.S. Open to attend his daughter’s high school graduation, Mickelson hasn’t played since the FedEx St. Jude Classic. He finished in ninth place there, and he’ll be ready to build on that heading into the Open.
