PARIS, FRANCE – JUNE 29: Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland plays his second shot on the 10th hole during day one of the HNA Open de France at Le Golf National on June 29, 2017 in Paris, France. (Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images) /

Graeme McDowell will have as much of a home course advantage as any this week in returning to Northern Ireland’s north coast near his home of Portrush.

He said he’s back in his old house seeing family and friends and playing a course in Royal Portstewart he got plenty of reps on growing up.

Until a couple missed cuts in a row in his last two events, McDowell has missed only one in 2017. He’s hoping a little local knowledge can turn those top 40s and top 50s into something special.

A lack of length off the tee that doomed McDowell at Erin Hills in the U.S. Open shouldn’t be too big of a factor here. He ranks a modest 46th in greens in regulation and 45th in putts per round on the European Tour. If he gets hot with his irons or flat stick, McDowell could be in the hunt for his first worldwide win since 2015.
