The Greenbrier Classic
Who is Sebastian Muñoz? The 24-year old Columbian who found his way to golf via volleyball and disc throwing, who’s played on the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and Web.com Tour where he won the 2016 Club Colombia Championship on his way to the PGA TOUR, has set the pace at the Greenbrier with a sizzling 9-under 61!
Davis Love, III, Ben Martin, David Lingmerth, and Xander Schauffele – the latter of U.S. Open fame – are starting the 2nd round right behind him, but Muñoz has a two shot edge over the following field. That has to feel good!
Headliners Phil Mickelson – who managed to hit a fan with an errant shot – and Bubba Watson both recorded sub-par rounds, but they’re starting the second round at the Greenbrier with a bit of a deficit. Defending champion Danny Lee, who’s starting at 6-under, has a bit of an advantage over the headliners.
On the whole, the mood at White Sulphur Springs on Thursday was nostalgic, combining memories of Arnie and others the game has lost with memories of last year’s tragic flooding and the massive rebuilding that preceded opening round tee time.
Bubba Watson remembered that horrific scene of a year ago:
"It was scary, it was depressing. . . That storm came in and houses were washed away, people lost their belongings, their pets. People lost their lives. Angie was delivering fresh water to people two hours away from the hotel. It was devastating."
Old White was destroyed. The Greenbrier Classic was cancelled. There was no golf course and local people, left homeless, took refuge in the hotel. And yet, almost immediately work began to make the impossible happen. The Old White, where Sam Snead and Lee Trevino and Tom Watson and Bubba Watson have all reigned as club pro, was brought back to life.
And the fact that the Greenbrier Classic is again in full play may be the biggest story of the golf week.
Second round play begins at 7am ET. Mickelson, Watson and Danny Lee are still paired and go off the #10 tee at 8am ET. For other pairing and tee times follow this link.
PGA TOUR LIVE begins second round streaming at 7am ET and Golf Channel begins live TV broadcast at 3pm ET, with a rebroadcast at 9am ET for those of you who can’t step away from your other Friday obligations to watch golf.
