Since tying for 12th place at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Zach Johnson has just one top-25 finish, at the Wells Fargo Championship. Still, there’s not going to be much better medicine for whatever ails Johnson than a trip to the John Deere Classic.
Johnson has finished in the top three at TPC Deere Run six times since 2009, including a win in 2012. There’s an obvious comfort level here that will bring out the best in Johnson’s game. He hasn’t had a round over par here since the third round in 2008. Even last year, Johnson opened with a six-under round of 65, one off the pace before back-to-back 71s took him out of serious contention.
Recent form would tell you to look elsewhere for a favorite, but Johnson’s game is built perfectly for this event. If he can just keep it together for four rounds, he’ll be as strong as anybody in the field.
