Jordan Spieth 12th hole Augusta National

For my money, there may not be a better single hole of golf anywhere on the planet than Golden Bell, No. 12 at Augusta National. The Bobby Jones-Alister Mackenzie gem is arguably the greatest of the planet’s golf courses, and this is one of the most iconic holes there.

Planted in the middle of Amen Corner, No. 12 features a little bit of everything that makes Augusta National so beautiful. From towering loblolly pines to pearl-white sand, to the Hogan Bridge over Rae’s Creek.

While so many of us remember Jordan Spieth’s quadruple-bogey 7 here in 2016 – the hole that cost him his second straight green jacket – the story goes much further back. In fact, writes Jim McCabe of the PGA TOUR, it’s been giving golfers fits all the way back to 1934.

I won’t rewrite Mr. McCabe’s history here, but suffice to say that the 12th hole has traditionally been a place where golfers can either continue their march toward the green jacket, or suddenly be forced to all but abandon ship, as Jordan Spieth experienced in 2016.

Simply put, though, there isn’t a single flaw with No. 12 at Augusta, and it (along with the rest of the course, obviously) should be at the top of any golfer’s bucket list.
