SAN ANTONIO, TX – APRIL 23: Robby Shelton plays his shot from the seventh tee during the final round of the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio AT /

There are plenty of reasons why Shelton is a strong pick this week.

Let’s start with his dominance on the Mackenzie Tour, where’s ascended to No. 1 on the money list thanks to a win and runner-up his last two starts. With a Web.com Tour card in his sights for 2017-18, the former collegiate All-American is seeking more.

The Alabama Crimson Tide product is in Auburn Tiger territory this week, but he should feel right at home returning to the site of his T3 as an amateur in 2015. That was the highest finish by an amateur in a PGA TOUR event since Phil Mickelson in 1991.

In Shelton’s return to the Barbasol Championship in 2016, he tied for 47th.

Shelton’s resume also includes a 2-1 record at the 2015 Walker Cup, former top-10 amateur status, an NCAA team championship and qualification for the 2014 U.S. Open at age 18.

Though not a powerful player, Shelton has worked his way around to make three of six cuts in limited PGA TOUR starts in 2017.

It seems as if it’s only a matter of time until the 23-year-old has his Tour card. This week could speed up the process significantly in front of family and friends.
