A streaky player like Jhonattan Vegas has hit a cold spell, missing five straight cuts going back to May. He’s also making the journey back across the pond from Royal Birkdale, where he limped to an 11-over two-day total.
We can forgive those sins by remembering his performance at Glen Abbey in 2016. The 32-year-old Venezuelan held off runners up Martin Laird, Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson to shoot 12-under for a one-stroke win.
It was Vegas’ second PGA TOUR win and helped to revitalize a once promising career sidetracked by injury and inconsistent play.
Before Vegas’ slump, he played good enough golf to lock down a FedEx Cup Playoffs spot. He made eight straight cuts to start 2017, including a T4 at the Honda Classic.
When he’s rolling, Vegas can make birdies in a hurry, a requisite to contend at Glen Abbey. He’s 77th in birdie average (3.63) and 44th in par-5 scoring (4.64).
