Veteran European Tour player Michael Hoey is a bit of a gamble. The Northern Irishman has five European Tour wins to his credit and he’s played against some of the best in the game and won, but his game has fallen off in recent years and he’s struggled to make the cuts.

Yet there is that T5 iat the Czech Challenge and the T11 at the Rocco Forte Open, both as recently as this May, and a T9 last year at the Paul Lawrie Match Play. There’s a game in Hoey’s bag and when you look at his stats it’s fairly easy to see where that game is the strongest. Despite all his performance woes, Hoey ranks 18th on the European Tour in average putts per round and 46th in average shots per round.

So in some respects my gamble isn’t a blind one. Hoey’s strength with his flatstick could yield a solid payoff for my fantasy team.
