Jordan Spieth is back where many would say he’s always belonged, No. 1 in the FedEx Cup points race and fighting to take back the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. Back to back wins and a third career major will tend to have that kind of positive effect on a player’s season.

Really, with the exception of a tough run at Erin Hills, Spieth has been working this way for two full months. After missing the cut at both THE PLAYERS and his hometown AT&T Byron Nelson, it almost looks like he turned on a switch to turn his competitive nature up to 11.

The comparisons still aren’t fair to Spieth, but when he rolled that long eagle putt in at Royal Birkdale on Sunday, you couldn’t help but see a little bit of Tiger in him, in only the best way.

With Dustin Johnson in action in Canada this week, it’s possible that Spieth’s stay atop the world rankings could be short-lived, but there’s not going to be any serious gap between him and DJ going forward. It’s the type of showdown that golf needs, and one that will have the fans flocking to courses in droves.
