Jordan Spieth celebrated his 24th birthday on Thursday, and what a birthday the Texan is having, with his mini-birthday cake perched atop the Claret Jug!

There’s much for Spieth to celebrate: 3 legs of his Career Grand Slam, 11 PGA TOUR titles, named to Time’s “100 Most Influential People” list in April 2016, youngest U.S. Open champion since Bobby Jones.

A 9,000 yard golf course?

Alan Shipnuck is taking a look at the men’s professional game and arguing that advances in equipment technology and an evolution in player preparation and readiness facilitated by “trainers, nutritionists, osteopaths, sports psychologists, putting gurus, stats experts, Trackman, Swedish nannies” have surpassed the capacity of 19th century golf courses to challenge.

I shudder at the notion of 9,000 yard golf courses. I would need to pack a bag lunch to get from the tips to my beloved forward tees. Five hour rounds would stretch out to seven hours.  Perhaps there are other ways to address Shipnuck’s concerns than carving out more fairway distance?
