Like I described with Jon Rahm, I came into this DraftKings competition with one player targeted for all of my lineups, and that man is Hideki Matsuyama. I understand the higher salaries that Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are commanding. However, when I saw that Matsuyama’s salary was just the fifth-highest, behind both Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler, I had to lock it up.

Simply put, Matsuyama is playing on another level right now, even compared to his own lofty expectations. His 61 on Sunday at Firestone was just the culmination of a season’s worth of outstanding work. On Sunday at the U.S. Open, it was Matsuyama, not champion Brooks Koepka, who had the low round of the day. His T-14 finish at Royal Birkdale was his worst in a major all year, and the timing just feels right for him to break through.

From tee to green, there’s essentially nobody better on the PGA TOUR today than Matsuyama. If there is one area of his game to nitpick, it would be his putting, but those woes seem to be far behind him, at least for now. I’ll take his rare combination of distance off the tee, finesse with irons and touch with wedges, and let the putting fall where it may.

Nothing is easy at a major championship, but Matsuyama is battle tested, and his value in DraftKings this week is incomparable. Don’t get too creative for your own good here. You would regret it on Sunday.
